A Nigerian news anchor died on September 29, 2025, after jumping from the third floor of her apartment building in an attempt to escape armed robbers in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, age 29, was discovered unconscious outside Unique Apartments in the Katampe district following the incident on Monday morning. She was transported to Maitama District Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The Arise News anchor and producer resided on the top floor of the three-story twin building complex, which contains 18 residential units. Federal Capital Territory Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale confirmed the building was specifically targeted by the robbers in the early hours.
Police reports indicate the attackers shot and killed one of two security guards who confronted them before they entered the premises. Commissioner Adewale explained that the ensuing panic led Maduagwu to jump from her third-floor apartment.
Adewale labeled the incident a “cruel and senseless act that has no place in a sane society.” He noted, “out of fear, she jumped down from that third story,” and expressed sorrow over the outcome.
The police commissioner initiated a thorough investigation into the attack. Law enforcement has deployed intelligence and operational teams to identify and arrest those responsible for what is being described as a heinous crime.

Several prominent Nigerian officials responded to the incident. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, expressed shock and sadness. He joined President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in urging security agencies to investigate thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah condemned the incident, describing Maduagwu’s death as a significant loss to the media industry. He noted that by age 29, she was already a respected professional reaching millions with her broadcasts.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani mourned the loss in a letter to Arise News chairman Prince Nduka Obaigbena, describing the incident as a national tragedy. He characterized it as an act of cowardice that ended a promising life.
Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris called the event regrettable and a significant loss to the media and the nation. He stated that federal authorities condemn the circumstances and that security agencies are fully engaged in the investigation.
Before joining Arise News, Maduagwu studied law in the United Kingdom and returned to Nigeria for national service. She worked as a legal executive and junior counsel before moving to broadcast journalism, focusing on women’s rights and legal affairs.
Tributes have poured in from colleagues, viewers, and the public, remembering Maduagwu for her professionalism. A memorial website has been established for sharing condolences and memories.
As of October 9, 2025, police announced the arrest of 12 suspects. According to Adewale, the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation. Authorities confirmed that the suspects are in custody and being interrogated as the investigation progresses.
