A former morning news anchor was arrested on Friday, November 1, 2025, after allegedly stabbing her 80-year-old mother to death on Halloween in their shared Wichita, Kansas, home, then telling dispatchers she committed the act to save herself.
Angelynn “Angie” Mock, 47, who worked as an anchor and reporter for Fox 2 News in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015, now faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Anita Avers. The incident unfolded Friday morning, October 31, 2025, in the 1500 block of East Crowley Street, sending shockwaves through the quiet residential neighborhood.
Officers with the Wichita Police Department responded to a reported cutting at approximately 7:52 a.m. Friday. When they arrived, they found Mock standing outside the residence with cuts on her hands. Inside the home, officers discovered Avers unresponsive in her bed, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Emergency responders transported Avers to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m., just over half an hour after police first arrived at the scene.
Neighbor Alyssa Castro witnessed the horrifying moments immediately following the attack. She told local media that a woman approached her vehicle, covered in blood, requesting help to call 911. “There was a woman who approached our vehicle with like blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” Castro said.
Castro indicated that Mock took her boyfriend’s phone and ran back inside the house. According to Sedgwick County dispatchers who spoke with local outlets, a woman called 911 claiming she had stabbed her mother to save herself. However, authorities have not officially confirmed who made that call.
Castro described Mock as appearing frightened and shaken during their brief encounter. The neighbor expressed concern for the woman’s wellbeing but noted she quickly disappeared back into the residence. Police later returned the phone to Castro’s boyfriend after completing their initial investigation.
Mock also received medical treatment at a hospital for undisclosed injuries before being transported to the Sedgwick County Jail. She was formally charged with first-degree murder on October 31 and is currently being held on a $1 million bond. Sedgwick County public records indicate the 47-year-old suspect is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 140 pounds, and remains in the main jail facility with an active charge status.
The victim was a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals, her husband confirmed to local media. Avers had built a career helping others navigate difficult family situations, making the circumstances of her death particularly tragic for those who knew her professionally.
Mock’s professional background includes her tenure at KTVI Fox 2 in St. Louis, where she served as a morning and evening fill-in anchor from March 2011 to February 2015. She also worked at KOKH Fox 25 in Oklahoma City during her career in broadcasting. After leaving television news, Mock transitioned into sales positions in the St. Louis area through August 2017.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Mock took a two-year hiatus from the workforce before joining a data management software company with at least five offices throughout the Midwest, including one location in Wichita. She was working in sales for this company at the time of her arrest.
The Wichita Police Department continues to investigate the incident, though authorities have not disclosed Mock’s motive for the alleged attack. Information regarding her initial court appearance was not immediately available as of Sunday, November 2, 2025.
Castro reflected on the traumatic experience, expressing gratitude that she and her boyfriend could assist in getting emergency services to the scene. She acknowledged that people face unseen struggles and emphasized the importance of helping others in crises, despite the random and disturbing nature of what unfolded that Halloween morning.
The investigation remains active as authorities work to piece together the events that led to Avers’ death in what neighbors described as a typically peaceful residential area. Mock remains in custody awaiting further legal proceedings in Sedgwick County.
