Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, recognized for his dual wins on the game show “Jeopardy!”, was arrested on December 1, 2025, on charges of felony secret peeping. DeSena, a development engineer from Raleigh, North Carolina, is accused of placing hidden cameras in a bathroom and bedroom without the occupants’ consent.
The alleged incident occurred on October 10, 2025, according to an arrest warrant from the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office in North Carolina. The warrant was served on November 26. Court documents claim DeSena installed a concealed camera in a bathroom to capture images of another individual unknowingly. DeSena turned himself in to Wake County authorities and posted a $5,000 bond, leading to his release from jail on December 3. He was instructed not to contact the victim and was required to provide fingerprints and a DNA sample.
A probable cause hearing was scheduled for December 10 in Currituck County Court. As of December 14, the court has released no new information. Each felony charge DeSena faces could result in a prison sentence of three to 24 months. DeSena has no prior serious criminal record aside from this case.
DeSena gained public attention as a contestant on “Jeopardy!” in November 2024, achieving two consecutive victories and winning a total of $44,698. His initial win on November 11, 2024, brought him $17,487, followed by another win the next day. He lost his third game. During his first episode, both competitors ended up with only $1 after wagering all-in on Final Jeopardy, resulting in a tie for second and third place. DeSena wore a Navy pin belonging to his father on the show as a tribute, stating on Reddit: “This was my little way of paying tribute to him on the Alex Trebek Stage. I made it, Dad.”
In January 2025, DeSena competed in the Champions Wildcard Tournament, aiming for a spot in the 2025 Tournament of Champions. He had a strong quarterfinal performance, answering 20 out of 22 questions correctly and successfully playing two Daily Doubles. However, he was eliminated in the semifinals by Drew Goins and Jen Feldman.
During his time on the show, DeSena interacted with fans on “Jeopardy!” Reddit forum. In one post, he mentioned writing “Lorelai” during a Final Jeopardy round as a message for his four-month-old daughter, hoping she would see it later and smile. He also shared that host Ken Jennings admitted to him that the Final Jeopardy question was difficult, which comforted DeSena after missing the answer.
DeSena first applied to be a “Jeopardy!” contestant in 2010, waiting over a decade before competing in November 2024. His two winning games were taped in the same morning session. Before appearing on television, DeSena was known in the retro-gaming community, contributing to projects like 16 Bit Gems, Apollo Z Hack, and The Video Game Years. From 2009 to 2015, he ran a YouTube channel named ClanOfTheGrayWolf under the alias “Roo.”
DeSena’s arrest is another instance of a “Jeopardy!” contestant facing serious legal trouble. Winston Nguyen, a former champion, was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2025 for pretending to be a teenager on Snapchat to obtain explicit images and videos from minors. Earlier, Paul Curry, another contestant, was convicted in 2014 for the 1994 death of his wife due to nicotine poisoning.
