Gunfire Erupts During Trump’s Address

On the night of Jan. 5, shots were fired near Miraflores Palace, the presidential residence in Caracas, Venezuela. This event happened just hours after President Donald Trump announced that he was personally overseeing the administration of the South American country, following the detainment of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Videos from the scene showed drones and what seemed to be anti-aircraft fire in the night sky. According to Venezuela’s Ministry of Communication, police officers targeted unauthorized drones flying over the area. They assured that no conflict ensued and the country remained fully peaceful.

Tensions in Venezuela escalated following a large-scale U.S. military operation that led to the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Trump said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller would form a team to guide U.S. involvement, with Rubio leading the effort under Trump’s direction.

Trump’s plan includes American control of Venezuela’s oil sector. From Mar-a-Lago, he announced that U.S. oil companies would repair the considerably damaged infrastructure and start generating revenue for the country. “We’re going to have our very large United States oil companies, the biggest anywhere in the world, to go in, spend billions of dollars to fix the badly broken infrastructure, the oil infrastructure, and start making money for the country,” Trump said.

Venezuela, one of the most resource-rich nations globally, holds nearly 303 billion barrels of oil reserves. However, years of underinvestment and mismanagement have left the country’s petroleum infrastructure severely damaged. Production has significantly dropped from peak levels, and the state-owned oil company has found it difficult to maintain operations.

Trump justified the intervention as a necessary step to safeguard American interests and revive Venezuela’s economy. He stated that the country’s oil wealth should be shared between Venezuelans and Americans.
