Beloved Princess Has Passed at 83

The Greek Royal Family announced the death of Princess Irene of Greece and Denmark on January 15, 2026. The 83-year-old princess, sister to Queen Sofia of Spain and aunt to King Felipe, died at Zarzuela Palace in Madrid, surrounded by family. She passed away at 11:40 local time, following a period of cognitive decline in recent years. Princess Irene never married or had children.

Princess Irene was born on May 11, 1942, in exile in Cape Town, South Africa. Her birth occurred during her parents, Crown Prince Paul and Princess Frederika’s exile from Athens due to the Nazi invasion of Greece in World War II. The family returned to Greece in 1946 after a referendum reinstated her uncle, King George II, to the throne.

Princess Irene was a skilled concert pianist, having trained under the esteemed Gina Bachauer. She performed professionally in the 1960s and earned a three-minute ovation at the Royal Festival Hall in 1969. Her love for music was a notable aspect of her life, along with her interest in archaeology.

Alongside Queen Sofia, Princess Irene participated in archaeological excavations and co-published an archaeological publication with Greek scholar Theophano Arvanitopoulou in 1960. The sisters shared a close bond, and Irene played a significant role in raising Sofia’s three children.

In 1964, following King Paul’s death from illness, her brother Constantine ascended the throne as King Constantine II of Greece at the age of 23. Despite initial popularity, his reign was marred by political unrest, culminating in a military coup in 1967 that led to his exile. The Greek monarchy was officially abolished in 1973.

During the tumultuous 1970s, Princess Irene relocated to India with her mother, immersing herself in Hindu culture. She converted to Hinduism during this time, which deeply influenced her spirituality. Following Queen Frederica’s death in 1981, the princess moved to Spain to live near her sister.

In an interview with HOLA magazine, Princess Irene said, “I came to Madrid for five days and stayed for five years.” Over time, she realized her place was beside Sofia, and she settled in an apartment at Zarzuela Palace, where she lived near King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofia.

Avoiding the limelight, Princess Irene dedicated herself to charity work. She founded the World in Harmony NGO and the World in Harmony Foundation in 1986, donating her entire inheritance to these organizations. “I have no status; I am the Queen’s sister, nothing more, and I am not an official,” she once stated. She obtained Spanish nationality in 2018 and renounced her Greek nationality.

Her nieces and nephews fondly referred to her as “Aunt Pecu,” an abbreviation for peculiar, due to her unique and eccentric personality, a characterization she embraced with humor. Princess Irene noted in interviews that her family often teased her about being the eccentric member, with Queen Sofia joining in the laughter.

Princess Irene maintained close ties with several generations of European royalty. Her father, King Paul, was a first cousin of Prince Philip, born Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark. Her late brother, King Constantine II, served as godfather to Prince William and remained a close friend of King Charles throughout his life.

Princess Irene made her last public appearance in February 2025 at the wedding of her nephew and godson, Prince Nikolaos of Greece, to Chrysi Vardinogiánni in Athens. She attended the celebration in a wheelchair, reflecting her declining health.

As Princess Irene’s health deteriorated, Queen Sofia canceled royal appearances in Palma de Mallorca in January 2026 to remain by her sister’s side. The former queen was present when Princess Irene died.

The Spanish royal household confirmed Princess Irene’s death, with King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, and Queen Sofia announcing their deep sadness at her passing.

Princess Irene is survived by Queen Sofia, King Felipe of Spain, Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, and numerous other nieces, nephews, and their families. Infanta Cristina of Spain named her daughter Irene, born in 2005, in honor of her aunt. Princess Irene’s funeral service was held on January 19, 2026, at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, attended by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofia, Queen Sofia, and members of the former Greek royal famil,y including Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, Prince Philippos, and former Queen Anne-Marie.

After the funeral service, she was laid to rest at the Royal Burial Ground at Tatoi Palace near Athens alongside her parents, King Paul and Queen Frederica, and her brother, King Constantine II, who died in 2023.

Throughout her 83 years, Princess Irene experienced exile, political unrest, and personal transformation, while remaining committed to family and philanthropy. Her life journey took her from war-torn South Africa to post-war Greece, from spiritual India to her final abode in Spain, where she was a quiet yet unwavering presence in the lives of those close to her.
