Former Nickelodeon child actor, Kianna Underwood, lost her life in a hit-and-run accident in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, on January 16, 2026. She died at the age of 33.
The fatal event took place around 6:45 a.m. at the junction of Pitkin Avenue and Mother Gaston Boulevard. A 9-1-1 call alerted police to the incident, revealing that Underwood had been struck by multiple vehicles.
According to reports from the New York Police Department, a black Ford Explorer SUV was heading west on Pitkin Avenue when the driver crossed a double yellow line to pass another vehicle. The SUV collided with Underwood as she attempted to cross the intersection.
After the initial impact, Underwood was hit again by a black and gray sedan while she was still on the road. She was declared dead at the site. Both drivers fled the scene, leaving no arrests so far. The case is currently under investigation by the NYPD Highway District Collision Investigation Squad from the 73rd Precinct.
Underwood’s body was discovered at Pitkin Avenue and Osborn Street, two blocks away from where the initial collision occurred.
At the time of her death, police records indicate that Underwood was homeless.
Underwood started her career in the entertainment industry as a child, voicing Fuschia Glover in the Nick Jr. show “Little Bill” from 1999 to 2004. She contributed to 23 episodes of the animated series.
In 2005, she appeared in seven episodes of Nickelodeon’s “All That,” a well-liked sketch comedy show for children. The show featured performers such as Kenan Thompson, Nick Cannon, and Amanda Bynes.
Besides her television work, Underwood showcased her talents on stage during the national tour of “Hairspray” as Little Inez. She also had a part in the film “The 24 Hour Woman.” She also provided voice work for the animated film “Santa, Baby!” in 2001 and appeared in the 2003 comedy “Death of a Dynasty,” which starred Kevin Hart.
In 2023, Angelique Bates, an original cast member of “All That,” expressed concern about Underwood’s well-being. Bates tried to highlight Underwood’s struggles through Instagram.
Bates noted, “Everything that’s happening right now, I pretty much predicted,” and asked, “Are people going to wait ’til it’s too late? That she’s gone or she’s in jail?”
Bates expressed a desire for Underwood to be remembered for her talent and humor. “As much as she loved her supporters, as much as she loved the franchise, I think she would have loved to know that that love was reciprocated,” she said.
This unfortunate hit-and-run event underscores the ongoing problem of pedestrian safety in New York City, particularly in high-traffic areas. New York law stipulates serious legal repercussions for hit-and-run incidents, where drivers leave the scene without providing assistance or information.
The Brownsville area in eastern Brooklyn has faced numerous safety issues over the years. Pitkin Avenue, a primary commercial route in the neighborhood, experiences significant vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the day. The intersection where the accident took place is often used by locals and commuters.
The investigation into Underwood’s death continues as officials work to identify and locate the drivers of the vehicles involved in the fatal collision. The New York Police Department has encouraged anyone with information about the incident to step forward.
The loss of Underwood is a tragedy for not only her loved ones but also for the community of former child actors and the fans who remember her work on Nickelodeon shows that entertained a generation of young viewers during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
