Trump Foresees His Own Death

PresidentDonald Trump, 79, startled his inner circle by calmly speculating about his own death. This comment was made at Mar-a-Lago, Florida, as TV screens displayed the casket of Jimmy Carter at the U.S. Capitol. He told those present, “You know, within ten years that will be me.”

This statement is referred to in a comprehensive New York Magazine profile named “The Superhuman President,” which discusses the president’s health and mental state. However, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told the magazine that she does not recall Trump making such a remark.

This incident brings a somber tone to discussions about 2028 among Trump and his team. Questions concerning his mortality are creeping into these talks as they ponder whether the president would be willing or even physically capable of initiating another campaign as he enters his early 80s.

Trump, on the other hand, has adopted the belief that remaining in the Oval Office is vital for his own survival. He shared with New York Magazine that his father, Fred Trump, often said: “To retire is to expire.” This quote, which he has used for years in interviews and on friendly platforms, points to his view of work, specifically the Oval Office, as a defense against aging.

Trump is already the oldest individual ever elected to the presidency. Instead of implying he might reduce his pace, he has suggested on numerous occasions that he could run again, even boasting about possibly seeking a third and technically a fourth term at 86, despite constitutional experts pointing out the Constitution’s two-term limit.

However, growing concerns about Trump’s health contrast sharply with his self-promotion. His advisors are troubled by his hand bruising, his documented instances of falling asleep during public events, and an unexplained MRI visit to Walter Reed. A noticeable bruise was visible on his left hand during his Jan. 22 appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The White House attributed the bruising to Trump hitting his hand on the corner of a signing table during the Board of Peace ceremony, combined with his daily aspirin regimen, which increases bruising susceptibility. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had previously cited “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin” as causes of hand bruising in July 2025.

Former White House lawyer Ty Cobb warned that signs of Trump’s mental decline are becoming more apparent. Dr. Bruce Davison mentioned during a podcast that the president’s daily aspirin dosage of 325 mg is typically prescribed to stroke patients.

This has led to a peculiar duality within Trump’s inner circle. On one side, he talks about mortality, his legacy, and his aspirations—from a $400 million East Wing ballroom to the “Arc de Trump” he envisions across from the Lincoln Memorial. Simultaneously, he continues to portray himself as a larger-than-life figure capable of outworking younger adversaries and defying the restrictions of aging.

Trump’s recent actions have raised additional concerns. On Jan. 23, 2026, he made over 70 Truth Social posts during 50 minutes from 12:40 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. This late-night posting spree occurred after he returned from Switzerland, where he had been at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Switzerland trip was challenging for the president as he had to retract plans to annex Greenland. The posting binge covered a wide range of topics, from a trailer for Melania’s Amazon documentary to reposted videos from Fox News and Joe Rogan’s podcast.

During this late-night social media activity, Trump also announced a TikTok joint venture. Oracle will own a 15 percent stake in TikTok U.S.

Trump has also shared negative posts about his political adversaries, including California Governor Gavin Newsom, Rep. Ilhan Omar, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. On Truth Social, Trump claimed that the Department of Justice is investigating Omar regarding her wealth, though the Justice Department has not confirmed any investigation. However, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer formally requested financial documents from Omar’s husband’s companies on February 6, 2026, setting a February 19 deadline for compliance. He stated that the Justice Department and Congress are examining Omar, who left Somalia with nothing and is now worth over $44 million.

Omar’s 2024 financial disclosure reports, however, show assets valued between $6 million and $30 million, representing business valuations where her husband is a partial owner rather than personal liquid wealth.

The tension between Trump’s public assertiveness and private health worries mirrors a broader trend in his second term. While he publicly exudes energy and vitality, those closest to him see a different scenario. The disparity between his social media activity—frequently posting in the middle of the night—and reports of public napping underscores the intricacy of evaluating his suitability for office.

Trump’s citation of his father’s saying about retirement and expiration is particularly poignant given Fred Trump’s own life history. The president’s interpretation of this idea—that relentless work, specifically in the Oval Office, can somehow delay aging and demise—indicates a mindset that may be affecting his unwillingness to recognize or address health concerns.

The president’s vision for his legacy includes ambitious—and costly—physical monuments. The proposed $400 million East Wing ballroom would be a significant addition to the White House, while the Arc de Trump across from the Lincoln Memorial would etch his name on the National Mall. These projects hint at a president deeply concerned with his lasting legacy, even as he publicly dismisses concerns about his mortality and fitness for office.
