On the first anniversary of President Trump’s return to the White House, Melania Trump reflected on the past year, describing her role as first lady as a deeply meaningful responsibility.
“A year ago today, I was entrusted to serve our country once again,” she wrote in a post on X on Tuesday, Jan. 20. She noted that being first lady is not only an honor but also a major duty, as a video highlighted her Inauguration Day schedule from the previous year, including her husband’s swearing-in, a Capitol luncheon and prayer service, a parade, and three inaugural balls.
Melania, 55, underscored her message of optimism while promoting her Amazon MGM Studios documentary “Melania,” which premiered in theaters Jan. 30. She wrote, “As we continue on this journey together, we must remember that hope is a powerful force and that our vision to create a brighter future for all is within reach.”
She previously told Fox News that their first time in the White House had been difficult due to a lack of necessary information. This time, however, she said she was fully prepared and had already selected the furniture, making the transition much smoother.
During her husband’s second term, Melania has taken a nontraditional approach to the first lady role, dividing her time between the White House, Trump Tower in New York City, and Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. She spent fewer than 14 days at the White House during the first 100 days after the Jan. 20, 2025, inauguration.
Her limited time in Washington coincided with a significantly reduced East Wing operation. By July 2025, her office had only five full-time employees, a dramatic cut from typical first lady staffing, reflecting a broader shift in how Melania Trump chose to fulfill her responsibilities.
Further contributing to the unusual nature of the term, the East Wing was demolished to build a massive 90,000-square-foot ballroom ordered by the president. Its removal displaced the traditional Office of the First Lady, requiring staff to work in rooms inside the Executive Mansion such as the Vermeil Room, South Mezzanine, Library, and China Room—spaces generally used for ceremonial purposes rather than daily operations.
Throughout this period, Melania Trump balanced limited time in Washington with strategic appearances at key events. She attended the National Day of Prayer Service on Jan. 21, 2025, at Washington National Cathedral with the president. A few days later, on Jan. 24, 2025, she joined him in surveying wildfire damage in Los Angeles and destruction from Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.
She also took part in traditional White House events, hosting the National Governors Association dinner on February 22, 2025. She engaged in policy discussions by joining a TAKE IT DOWN Act roundtable on March 3, 2025, focusing on legislation against revenge pornography and non-consensual intimate imagery. The next day, on March 4, 2025, she attended President Trump’s joint session of Congress speech.
Her spring schedule also included presenting awards at the International Women of Courage Awards on April 1, 2025, alongside Marco Rubio. She oversaw the White House Easter Egg Roll on April 21, 2025, continuing a long-standing tradition. On April 26, 2025, she represented the United States at a papal funeral in Rome, traveling to Vatican City for the international event.
Melania Trump’s influence extended into policy matters as well. She wrote a peace letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 16, 2025, which President Trump delivered during their summit in Alaska. Putin read the letter in front of both delegations during the historic meeting.
She also advocated on humanitarian issues. Reports say she influenced the president’s views on Gaza concerns and contributed to his skepticism of Putin regarding Ukraine. On October 10, 2025, she held a press conference focusing on the abduction of Ukrainian children, highlighting her behind-the-scenes diplomatic role.
Her diplomatic work continued with a state visit to Britain on September 17–18, 2025, which included engagements at Windsor Castle. These appearances underscored her ongoing representation of the United States abroad despite her limited presence at the White House.
Melania also maintained attention on technology and education issues. She participated in a meeting of an AI education task force, showing her ongoing interest in emerging policy challenges affecting families and children, consistent with her focus on child welfare and digital safety.
Her approach to the first lady role marks a break from traditional norms. Her choice to divide her time among several residences reflects a modern interpretation of the position, blending personal preference with official responsibilities.
Throughout the year, Melania Trump made strategic appearances at key events despite spending limited time in Washington. Her involvement in ceremonial occasions, from the Easter Egg Roll to international diplomatic visits, kept the Office of the First Lady visible even as its staff and physical footprint shrank.
