Elton John’s Husband Issues Health Update

David Furnish offered a comforting update on his husband, Elton John’s, health, telling Variety the music legend is “battling on” despite persistent vision issues that have troubled the 78-year-old singer over the last year.

Speaking ahead of the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party on Sunday, March 15, 2026, Furnish described a content home life for the EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony award) winner, who retired from touring to be with family.

Furnish noted that John is holding up well, continuing to fight, staying active and focused at home with their sons — the reason he left the road.

Furnish and John are parents to two boys: Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13. Since John ended his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour in July 2023, the family has largely kept to themselves, swapping packed arenas for life near Windsor Castle.

The “Rocket Man” has been open about his mounting health challenges in recent years. In July 2024, he lost sight in his right eye after a severe infection while on vacation in the south of France. On Good Morning America that November, he disclosed the severity of his condition: four months without vision in his right eye and reduced sight in his left.

The vision loss is one more in a string of medical setbacks for the celebrated artist. At the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of the documentary “Elton John: Never Too Late,” he humorously listed his operations, telling the crowd he’s had surgery on his knees, right hip, prostate, appendix, and tonsils.

“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” John quipped. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids, or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip.”

In 2021, John experienced a painful fall that forced him to cancel several farewell tour dates. He later underwent hip surgery and intensive physiotherapy to regain full mobility and return to performing.

Despite these obstacles, John remains committed to his philanthropic efforts. The annual Academy Awards viewing party, now in its 34th year, raised money for HIV/AIDS research and advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised more than £300 million since 1992.

This year’s celebration was co-hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and his husband, David Burtka. Grammy winner Lola Young performed, and attendees included a star-studded list such as Dua Lipa, Donatella Versace, Keke Palmer, Quinta Brunson, Jon Batiste, Nikki Glaser, Adam Lambert, Melanie Lynskey, Jason Ritter, and Sharon Stone.

Ticket demand was strong, Furnish said, and the event showcased a special artwork by Irish painter Jack Coulter. Coulter created the piece live while John played “Tiny Dancer” on piano — a unique collaboration.

Organizers said the Oscar viewing party raised $10.6 million, adding to one of the entertainment world’s most established charity events.

John and Furnish were seen together at Donatella Versace’s New Year’s Eve party in 2025, with Zachary and Elijah in attendance. The uncommon public outing highlighted the family’s effort to stay connected amid John’s health battles.

Although John has left behind the rigors of touring, Furnish’s comments indicate he’s found calm in this stage of life. He focuses on family time while continuing to support causes that define his legacy beyond music. For concerned fans, Furnish’s update provides reassurance: John is in good spirits, surrounded by love, and staying involved despite his physical limitations.
