Search teams fought through thick smoke and hazardous air for four days before extracting the final victims Thursday afternoon. Workers equipped with oxygen tanks navigated the toxic environment during the operation. All 25 individuals perished in the incident, Sikkim state officials confirmed after a final sweep of the site.
Investigation Launched Into Explosion Trigger
Initial assessments suggest combustible gas ignited inside the tunnel, though authorities emphasized that formal findings await expert review. NHPC rejected claims circulating in the media that a landslide caused the tunnel to cave in. This incident adds to a troubling record of construction fatalities as India pushes rapid infrastructure expansion across its northern and northeastern mountain states. Fragile geology, lax enforcement of safety regulations, harsh weather, and the inherent risks of tunneling through ancient formations have combined to produce recurring disasters.
About 30 workers died in a coal mine blast in neighboring Meghalaya state in February 2026. A 2023 tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand state trapped 41 workers for 17 days before rescuers freed them alive after a lengthy national ordeal. The Sikkim tragedy ended with no survivors.
NHPC developed the Teesta project as part of India’s strategy to harness hydroelectric power from rivers fed by Himalayan glaciers. The Teesta flows from high elevations in Sikkim down through West Bengal’s lowlands, offering substantial energy generation capacity. Yet the same steep slopes, active faults, and young rock that create hydropower opportunities also make tunnel excavation exceptionally perilous.
Questions Over Safety Protocols
With the recovery phase complete, focus now turns to the government inquiry, financial support for bereaved families, and whether existing safety standards are sufficient for tunnel work in earthquake-prone areas. The investigative committee will probe not just the immediate cause of the methane ignition but broader systemic issues that may have left workers vulnerable without adequate protection.
