FOX Commentator Erupts in Fiery On-Air Outburst

A heated on-air clash erupted between Fox News contributor Ted Williams and guest host Jason Chaffetz over President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy 500 additional National Guard members to Washington, D.C., following the shooting of two soldiers near the White House.

The tense exchange unfolded during The Ingraham Angle, where Chaffetz was serving as guest host. Williams sharply questioned the president’s deployment order issued after two National Guard members were shot just two blocks from the White House near Farragut West Metro Station on November 27, 2025.

“One of my deepest concerns right now is that the president has decided to send 500 additional National Guard members to the District of Columbia,” Williams said during the segment. “And I’m asking, why in the hell are you doing that, President?”

Williams warned of potential consequences from heightened military presence on city streets. The National Guard members currently stationed in Washington, D.C., are deeply concerned after learning two of their fellow soldiers were shot, he argued, adding they will be on high alert.

Chaffetz responded with visible frustration, challenging Williams’ opposition to additional troops. The host questioned whether Williams viewed National Guard members as allies or threats in the situation.

Williams countered by emphasizing training concerns. He explained that National Guard members are not trained to perform law enforcement duties, despite their presence being welcomed in the District of Columbia.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced Trump’s deployment order following the shooting. Hegseth declared the attack, which occurred steps from the White House, would not stand. Trump has maintained thousands of National Guard troops in the capital for months as part of his administration’s federal crime crackdown initiative.

Authorities detained a suspect in connection with the shooting, identifying him as a 29-year-old Afghan national named Rahmanullah Lakanwal. One victim, Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries, while Andrew Wolfe remains hospitalized in serious condition but has shown positive signs of responsiveness.

Trump released a video statement calling the attack an act of evil, hatred and terror. The president noted the suspect was flown into the United States in September 2021 during the previous administration. However, law enforcement officials revealed Lakanwal applied for asylum and received approval in April under the current Trump administration.

During the contentious exchange, Chaffetz cited crime statistics to support the National Guard presence. He pointed to homicides being down 60 percent in Washington, D.C., and overall crime declining 30 percent. The host argued residents and visitors appreciate the increased security presence.

Williams attempted multiple times to interrupt and counter Chaffetz’s arguments, but the host maintained control of the segment. Chaffetz insisted on continuing his response before moving to the next panel segment.

The confrontation reflects broader tensions over Trump’s approach to law enforcement in the nation’s capital. Williams emphasized the need to understand the shooter’s motives, questioning why someone would shoot National Guard members in the District of Columbia.

Both men agreed on the importance of prayers and support for the shooting victims. However, their fundamental disagreement over the appropriate federal response highlighted divisions even within conservative media circles about deploying military forces for domestic law enforcement purposes.

Chaffetz praised Trump and Hegseth for acting immediately following the shooting. He argued the swift deployment sends a message that such violence will not be rewarded with reduced security presence. Williams, while acknowledging the need for security, maintained his position that National Guard troops lack proper training for law enforcement work and urged removing partisan politics from the discussion of the tragedy.

The debate underscores continuing questions about the role of federal forces in local law enforcement and appropriate responses to violent incidents in the nation’s capital. Williams closed his appearance by calling for focus on victim recovery and determining the shooter’s true motivations rather than political positioning.
