Michael J. Fox’s Death Scare Had Fans Fearing the Worst

A major error by CNN on April 8 caused widespread panic among fans of Michael J. Fox when the network published a video and article with the title “Remembering the life of actor Michael J. Fox” — despite the fact that the actor is alive.

TMZ was first to report that Fox was alive and well, speaking directly with his representative to set the record straight. CNN pulled the post down after the error was discovered, but thousands of fans had already flooded social media with messages of grief, confusion, and anger.

“Michael is doing great,” his rep told TMZ. “He was at PaleyFest yesterday. He was on stage and was giving interviews.”

The 64-year-old actor had just made a surprise appearance the day before at PaleyFest LA, attending the wrap party for season three of Apple TV+’s “Shrinking,” where he has a guest role. Fox appeared on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for a special screening and panel that included co-creator and star Jason Segel, as well as cast members Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, and Ted McGinley, among others.

CNN later issued a statement, saying: “The package was published in error; we have removed it from our platforms and send our apologies to Michael J. Fox and his family.”

Fox responded to the confusion on Threads with characteristic humor. “How do you react when you turn on the TV and CNN is reporting your death?” he wrote, before offering a satirical multiple-choice list of reactions. He concluded: “I thought the world was ending, but apparently it’s just me and I’m ok.”

The blunder has reignited criticism of major news organizations for premature or misleading obituary content. Publishing a tribute-style post about a living celebrity without context or explanation is the type of irresponsible journalism that spreads dangerous misinformation online, critics said. This isn’t the first time Fox has been targeted by a death hoax — in 2018, false claims about his death circulated widely on social media, likely fueled by his public struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Fox was first diagnosed at the age of 29 in 1990, though he kept his condition private for nearly a decade before going public with his diagnosis in 1998. Since then, he has become one of the most prominent advocates for Parkinson’s research in the world, founding The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. The foundation has since funded more than $2 billion in research aimed at finding a cure for the disease.

Fox stepped back from Hollywood years ago due to the progressive effects of Parkinson’s disease, the illness he has battled for more than three decades. He officially retired from acting in 2020, citing the increasing difficulty of managing speech and memory challenges brought on by his condition. However, he has continued to make occasional appearances, including his widely praised 2023 documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which gave audiences an intimate look at his life and his decades-long fight against Parkinson’s. He has also taken on voice roles and appeared in both “The Good Fight” and “Shrinking.” For fans who follow Fox closely, public appearances like this have become increasingly rare and deeply meaningful.

Co-creator Bill Lawrence has said Fox’s portrayal of a therapist living with Parkinson’s brought an authenticity to the show that could not have been achieved any other way. Fans who rushed to social media to mourn were quickly met with the reassuring news — their hero is still here, still fighting, and still showing up when it matters most.
