Authorities in Los Angeles are working to determine what killed a young man who became unresponsive during a Southwest Airlines flight on the morning of Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, and later died despite efforts to save him.
The Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office identified the victim as Rain McMillan Walmsey, 22 years old. Officials listed his cause of death as “deferred,” indicating that further investigation is needed before a determination can be made.
Flight Continues to LAX Despite Crisis
Walmsey lost consciousness while aboard Southwest Flight 958, which was traveling between Dallas Love Field and LAX in Los Angeles. Rather than divert the aircraft, the crew opted to proceed to its destination with emergency responders ready upon landing.
Passengers and flight attendants performed CPR on Walmsey while the plane remained in the air, law enforcement sources confirmed. Paramedics were standing by when the aircraft arrived at LAX, but their attempts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful. Firefighters declared him dead at the scene.
