1 Dead, 8 Injured in World Cup Supporter Stampede

A crowd crush during a public viewing of Jordan’s World Cup match against Algeria killed one person and injured eight others early on June 23, 2026, at a packed screening site in central Amman, authorities said.

Thousands of supporters had gathered at Hashemite Square, next to the city’s ancient Roman amphitheater, to watch the Group J contest on giant screens when sudden crowd movement and heavy congestion triggered the deadly incident. Emergency teams rushed nine injured people to the hospital, where one later died, while the remaining eight were treated for injuries described as minor to moderate, according to the Jordan News Agency, citing the country’s Public Security Directorate.

The Public Security Directorate said the eight injured were in stable condition. The deceased was referred to the coroner, and investigators are working to determine the precise cause of death. Authorities said their inquiry into the circumstances remains ongoing and have not yet said how many people had gathered at the square.

Authorities subsequently identified the victim as 15-year-old Zaid Yousef Al-Damasi and notified his family. He had not been carrying identification at the time of the crush, which delayed identifying him for several hours.

A Historic Night Ends in Grief

The scale of the gathering reflected how much Jordan’s maiden World Cup qualification had meant to its people. Fans assembled not only at Hashemite Square but at venues across the capital, including the Roman amphitheater and the Odeon Theater, watching on giant screens. Ahead of the match, organizers had announced public-viewing arrangements with capacity limits, designated areas for families and people with disabilities, and marked entry and exit routes.

The match itself delivered a painful result alongside the tragedy. Algeria defeated Jordan 2-1 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California, a comeback win that kept Algeria’s hopes of advancing alive while confirming Jordan’s elimination. Having also lost their opening match to Austria, Jordan exited the tournament after two straight defeats in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Safety Concerns Follow the Tragedy

The crush has drawn renewed attention to the safety challenges of large public gatherings during major sporting events, particularly in dense city-center heritage districts where crowd-management infrastructure may not be built for sudden surges. Investigators are working to establish whether the surge began in the closing moments of the match, after the final whistle, or as spectators started to leave — and whether the announced crowd-control measures held.

Jordan’s Public Security Directorate has opened a formal investigation, with forensic specialists examining the cause of the single confirmed death. Officials say their work continues as they piece together the sequence of events that turned a night of national pride into one of mourning.
