In their first joint network television appearance since leaving the White House in January 2017, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama sat down with host Robin Roberts on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on June 17, 2026, directly confronting months of speculation about the state of their marriage.
The interview, ostensibly focused on promoting the Obama Presidential Center opening in Chicago, came after extensive online chatter about potential marital difficulties between the couple, who have been together for 33 years.
Speculation intensified when Michelle Obama was notably absent from former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral in January 2025. She also skipped President Donald Trump’s inauguration, and those absences, combined with a string of solo public appearances, kept the rumors alive.
During an April 2025 appearance on actress Sophia Bush’s podcast Work in Progress, Michelle Obama tackled the rumors head-on, saying people “couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself” without assuming the marriage was in trouble.
The couple also addressed the divorce rumors with levity during a July 2025 episode of the IMO podcast, which Michelle Obama co-hosts with her brother Craig Robinson. Barack Obama appeared as a surprise guest, and Michelle introduced him to listeners by saying, “It’s my husband, y’all!”
When Robinson joked, “Wait, you guys like each other?” Michelle replied, “Oh yeah, the rumor mill.” Barack joked in return, “She took me back. It was touch and go for a while.”
When Robinson commented that it was nice to have them both in the same room together, Michelle quipped, “I know, ’cause when we aren’t, folks think we’re divorced.”
Body language expert Judi James, a regular television commentator and author of 26 books, including the Body Language Bible, analyzed the couple’s appearance for The U.S. Sun.
“They’re not your celebrity show ponies,” James said, adding that the couple appeared relaxed rather than performing for the cameras.
According to James, the Obamas avoided the overtly affectionate displays that many celebrities and politicians employ when facing relationship speculation. What she observed instead struck her as “almost a minor miracle” for such a long-standing marriage.
During the “Good Morning America” interview, the couple demonstrated remarkable synchronization, with each partner stopping to listen attentively when the other spoke—a rarity in long-term relationships, according to the expert. They even spoke the same words simultaneously at points during the conversation, including the phrase “construction site.”
Before the “Good Morning America” appearance, Barack Obama had twice attempted to publicly dispel the speculation. He posted a photo of the pair holding hands on Michelle’s birthday and shared a Valentine’s Day selfie with the caption: “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away.”
James noted that despite the lighthearted exchange during the podcast episode, Michelle Obama’s body language suggested some discomfort when the rumors came up.
James said neither appeared particularly comfortable discussing the speculation, and that Michelle rubbed her thighs and positioned her feet awkwardly.
According to James, Barack seemed less aware of the gossip’s extent while Michelle appeared more focused on confronting it directly, with facial expressions suggesting frustration at needing to address it publicly. Michelle’s raised brows and head movements when questioning why people couldn’t accept their relationship suggested inner anger, James said.
James described the interaction as “primarily friendly and professional,” with the couple displaying limited intimate gestures beyond brief hand-holding.
The Obama Presidential Center opening represents a new chapter for the couple as they continue their post-White House lives in Chicago. The couple discussed their shared history in the city and their vision for the future of the new institution, which will serve as both a museum and community gathering space, cementing the Obamas’ legacy in the city where their relationship and political careers began.
Through it all, the Obamas have met the rumors with humor and directness rather than letting them go unanswered.
