White House insiders harbor deep anxiety over a figure they cannot predict or manage: First Lady Melania Trump. Journalist Michael Wolff contends this in a new essay titled “Melania: The Wild Card” and published on his Substack newsletter, HOWL. Wolff, who wrote the bestselling exposé “Fire and Fury” and has tracked the Trump administration for years, argues that aides view her as the greatest unknown within President Donald Trump’s inner circle — someone with potential influence who might one day choose to deploy it in ways no one can forecast.
Recent developments underscore the pattern. This year, the first lady has made only 14 to 16 public appearances, according to journalist Joanna Coles speaking on the “Inside Trump’s Head” podcast — a sharp contrast to her predecessors. Michelle Obama made 100 to 150 appearances annually, Laura Bush around 120, and Jill Biden routinely surpassed 100. The first lady also skipped Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral on July 28, 2026, though she issued a statement marking his passing. The reason for her absence remains unclear.
Wolff traces part of the West Wing’s nervousness to the first lady’s public remarks about Jeffrey Epstein, in which she said she had no ties to the disgraced financier. That assertion, he suggests, signaled an independence that leaves staff perpetually guessing. Almost no one around the president — Trump included — can predict the first lady’s next move before she makes it, Wolff writes.
Fraying Personal Ties
The marriage between the president and first lady has reached its coldest point since the Stormy Daniels trial, a period Wolff describes as profoundly strained. The two barely communicate, he claims, and there is scarcely any pretense that she resides at the White House full time. Instead, earlier reporting suggests she spends much of her time in New York City rather than in Washington with her husband.
Wolff wrote that “Every appearance is a negotiated one.” He characterizes her as more autonomous now than at any prior stage of their marriage — freer, more remote, and less tethered to the president’s needs. That autonomy, rather than any specific complaint, is the true source of unpredictability, he contends.
Business Ventures Spark Concern
Financial disclosure records released June 30 by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics offer a window into the first lady’s income. The 927-page document reveals that the first lady earned $17.2 million from outside ventures. Her Amazon MGM Studios documentary, “Melania,” chronicled the three weeks leading up to her husband’s second swearing-in ceremony. Amazon MGM Studios, owned by Jeff Bezos, spent approximately $75 million on the project. Despite ticket sales of only $16.7 million worldwide, the licensing deal brought the Trumps $10.71 million. A memoir also titled “Melania,” published in 2024, generated roughly $521,000.
Those commercial pursuits unsettle staffers more than the business activities of Trump’s children, Wolff asserts. The real worry isn’t the revenue itself but the spotlight she commands — a dynamic Wolff believes could spark direct friction with the president. Within the Trump family, making money is tolerated; stealing the limelight is not.

Administration Fires Back
The White House response was blunt. Spokesman Davis Ingle called Wolff “a lying piece of s–t” — a dismissal that avoids addressing the column’s substance directly. Critics of Wolff have heard similar rebuttals before.
In Wolff’s telling, the first lady stands apart from the protective apparatus shielding the president. Trump’s vulnerabilities — questions about his associates, business dealings, and health — remain visible, Wolff writes, yet aides, lawyers, doctors, congressional leaders, and billionaires have collaborated to deflect scrutiny. His wife, by contrast, operates outside that system: a variable the president cannot script or contain.
Wolff’s reporting draws on anonymous sources and his own analysis, and the White House has rejected it outright. What remains undisputed is that he has once again focused on the member of the Trump orbit who speaks least in public — and who, according to him, keeps everyone around her on edge.
